The Grand Mesa was formed when lava seeped through fissures in the earth 10 million years ago.

The Black Canyon of the Gunnison. The Black Canyon reaches depths of over 2000 feet, while only being 1500 feet across. The sun illuminates the walls briefly during the day, hence the name "Black Canyon".
The Black Canyon can we reached from Montrose Colorado or from the other side of Crawford Colorado. Teh temperture at the bottom of the black canyon is approximatley 8 degrees warmer than at the rim.
There are many different types of wildflowers on the Grand Mesa and all throughout Colorado. The Lupine grows wild all over the mountain sides. They bloom though the summer months.
